Institutions of Higher Education

A note from the Program Director

Rounding out my 7th year working with college students in National Service, I am still in awe of how much change a single person can make in the lives of so many. In the innaugural year of the One Utah Service Fellowship, more than 850 change making individuals will exceeded expectation and go on to complete more than 380,675 hours of service with an economic value of $12,105,465. Under these change making individuals 4,285 additional volunteers will be mobilized in Utah's communities, and provide a record number of services to more than 99,000 patients, clients, and students. These change making individuals will earn $3.8 Million ensuring that they can pay for their living expenses and education.

The OUSF Fellows will be with expectant parents preparing to being new life into the world, stepping into early education classrooms to ensure a bright beginning for youth, encouraging improved academic engagement and social and emotional skills in their students increasing retention rates across the state, supporting patients in their health journeys taking the time to provide care with compassion, and supporting the services of non-profits.

I hope that we are able to continue to recognize the significant national service efforts coming out of the higher education students in Utah as well as the millions of dollars in student funding that has come back to our higher education institutions directly.

I invite you to:

1. Read the stories of our Fellows and the National Service Alumni who came before them and see how National Service shapes their college experience.

2. Learn more about the Fellowship Program and set up a meeting to determine how your institution can expand this opportunity for your students.

3. Make supporting debt-free pathways to higher education a priority and ensure to keep up to date on the efforts of the One Utah Service Fellowship so that future students can continue to benefit.

All my best,

Janell C. Torres
